Saved by the Sweets

I still don't get it why women are so particular with dates - birthdays, anniversaries, etc... Forget a date and boy I'm sure you're in for some silent treatment and crankiness. I remember one experience where I'm about to have a hell of an anniversary if not for the personalized sweets from a nearby candy shop.

I met my wife, well, in a candy shop. Call it fate that we both love sweets. There's only one candy shop in town, and it has been a haven of all sugar lovers. She was picking some licorice while I was in to buy my favorite candy bar. Our eyes met and we stare at each others items as we wait in line for the cashier. Nine months later and we announced our wedding. The wedding was (I guess it's not a surprise) inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The stars of the wedding (aside from my beautiful wife of course) are the cake and the personalized sweets we gave away as souvenirs.

We're married for five years now, we have a son and personalized sweets played a major role in our lives most important moments as yet. When our son turned one, all the kids and attendees of the party absolutely loved the foods and the sweet treats we offered them throughout the day.

She would also give me personalized sweets during my birthdays. The options of personalizing our favorite sweets are endless from the jar to the color and whatnot. She never failed to surprise me every time. However, things weren't the same as they were. I was assigned abroad for six months and been very busy with my work. I needed to do well to give them comfort and the best things in life.

While I forgot how happy we were with our beloved son and the sweets from the same candy shop we met, she never ceased to give me personalized sweets every birthday and if I needed some break from my work. She always does it right. I guess she just knows me too well and what I want when it comes to sweet delights.

Our fifth anniversary came, work was pretty hectic and I didn't seem to notice the date. I came home late because I had to finish something important for the next day's presentation. My day (technically night) ended tired, weary, and just wanting to hit the sack and sleep all the tiredness away. I woke up the next morning with my wife giving me "the look" and cranky as if Oprah has quit the show business. Then it hit me like a resounding clap of thunder - I forgot our anniversary! Like a godforsaken man I went to work guilty.
