Why Do We Give Gifts at Christmas?

Have you spent way too much time contemplating what the best or most popular Christmas gift would be for your kids? What gift would put that smile on their face that would just light up your day? Sometimes finding that gift can be a challenge; sifting through countless catalogs, visiting numerous stores, and then waiting for just the right price. Then there is the problem of getting your hands on the most popular Christmas gifts while competing with all the other parents going for the same gift. Why do we go through all of this for what we call "The Christmas Season"?

Many celebrate this time of year because of religious tradition even if they themselves are not religious. I believe giving gifts during this season is an expression of our gratitude for those that surround us everyday. Although we have seriously commercialized Christmas and its meaning, we can still see the element of generosity in a very tangible way.

Through the endless shopping trips and constant requests, we as parents never want to send the wrong message that Christmas is all about presents. For a young child so many presents can be overwhelming. Did you ever notice the younger the child the more they like the boxes, bows and wrapping paper more than the actually gift? Having things to look forward to other than presents makes the day even more special.

Find something that the whole family can enjoy and start your own tradition to look forward to. Maybe Christmas Eve can be made into game night, or cookie night, or building a family gingerbread house. When you find that special event everyone's laughter will make memories year after year after year.
